How to Serve: Turkish-Style Tea

Tea is the center of Turkish hospitality, brewed strong in a double teapot (çaydanlık) and served in tulip glasses all day long.

Serving Ideas

  • Çaydanlık method: Boil water in the bottom pot. Put 4–5 tbsp tea in the top pot, add a little hot water and let it steam on top for 10–15 minutes on low heat.
  • Serving: Pour the brewed tea a quarter or half way into a glass and top with hot water: less water for 'koyu' (strong), more for 'açık' (light).
  • With breakfast: The essential drink with cheese, olives, simit and pastries.
  • With dessert: Cuts the sweetness of baklava, helva and künefe.

Tips

  • Never boil the tea leaves; gentle steeping keeps it from turning bitter.
  • For green tea, use water just off the boil and steep 2–3 minutes only.
