Authentic Recipe: Etli Patates Yemeği (Beef & Potato Stew)

A cozy Turkish home stew of potatoes in a tomato and pepper-paste sauce. Ready-cooked stewed beef makes it a 30-minute meal.

Serves: 4 | Prep: 10 min | Cook: 25 min

Ingredients

  • 1 can stewed beef (tushonka)
  • 4 potatoes, cut into cubes
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green pepper, chopped
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp red pepper paste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 cups hot water
  • Salt, black pepper, pul biber

Instructions

  1. Cook the onion and pepper in the oil until soft.
  2. Stir in both pastes for a minute.
  3. Add the potatoes and hot water, bring to a boil, then simmer covered for 15 minutes.
  4. Add the stewed beef with its juices and simmer 5–10 minutes more, until the potatoes are tender. Season to taste.

Tips

  • The beef is already cooked, so add it at the end just to heat through.
  • Serve with rice pilaf, pickles and a spoon of yogurt.
