Authentic Recipe: Et Sote (Sautéed Beef with Peppers)

Et sote is a quick Turkish home favorite: thin strips of beef seared with onion, peppers and tomato. Thinly sliced sandwich steaks make it a 20-minute dinner.

Serves: 4 | Prep: 10 min | Cook: 15 min

Ingredients

  • 1 pack beef sandwich steaks, cut into strips
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 green peppers, sliced
  • 2 tomatoes, grated or diced
  • 1 tbsp pepper paste or tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt, ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a wide skillet over high heat and sear the beef strips in batches until browned. Set aside.
  2. Lower the heat to medium, add the onion and peppers and cook until soft.
  3. Stir in the paste, then the tomatoes, and cook for 3–4 minutes.
  4. Return the beef, season with salt, pepper, thyme and pepper flakes, and cook 2–3 minutes more.

Tips

  • Don't crowd the pan, or the beef will steam instead of sear.
  • Serve with rice pilaf or bulgur and a spoon of yogurt.
